Northampton Sailing Club hosted the RS Vareo GP on June 19/20th .

A disappointingly small entry of 11 boats attended the third round of the Gul series.  Saturday started with some training for two boats, Dave Berry a newcomer to the class from Swarkestone and Cheryl Wood, a welcome returnee after a year's absence.  The conditions were quite challenging, with a blustery northerly wind which caused a few capsizes and set the tone for the rest of the day.

Race officer and club commodore Ian Castle started the event promptly at one o'clock with the Varoes doing the outer part of an Olympic trapezoid which enabled good separation from the large Feva fleet sailing on the inner loop for most of the time although some competitors had some interesting moments going downwind through the fleet when gusts hit.  Race 1 saw an early group of Chris Larr, Andrew Wilson and Rory Yardley building an early lead, with Chris Larr eventually extending away to win quite comfortably.  In the second race Richard Willows and Andrew Wilson tussled in second place, whilst again Chris was a clear winner.

Race 3 saw a much closer first beat until Chris Larr and Richard Willows went away and had a close battle with the lead being exchanged twice on the final round, but Chris Larr eventually winning.  Race 4 showed Chris Larr again winning with Andrew Wilson second, and Mike Cowan from Bassenthwaite got the measure of the conditions to finish third.

Sunday morning dawned to slightly less wind and warmer conditions, and race 5 produced some very close racing with Rory Yardley establishing an early lead with Chris Larr a little way down the fleet, but eventually he worked his way through to finish first, and Andrew Wilson a consistent third.  Nick Crickmore failed to count to four at the leeward mark& sailed up  the beat again to allow Richard Willows to claim fourth place somewhat fortuitously.  For the fifth race the sun came out and the wind started to move around considerably with 40 to 50° shifts with some gaps between the gusts.  Richard Willows and Andrew Wilson and Anthony Payne established a significant lead on the first downwind, but Richard and Andrew pulled away on the second beat and had a private battle for first place, with Richard Willows eventually winning on the final beat.  Chris Larr pulled up to third place for his discard!

So finally, Chris was the easy winner with five firsts to count, Andrew Wilson second and Richard Willows third.
